NASCAR Models by Daniel Ziemann!!

The King's 1966 Charger.

Note From Daniel: "The King's Charger. Not that King, the OTHER King!

This is the movie car from “Speedway”, starring Elvis and Nancy Sinatra. A 1968 release, filmed in 1967, with a car that looks like the 1966 car that Sam McQuagg had a bad tumble in.

I had wanted to do this build for a while and recently found the decals. This isn’t a detailed build, just a nice shelf model.

I started with a MPC Charger Street Machine. The chassis is modified by adding a Johan gas tank cover and adding the missing torsion bars and front control arms with Evergreen products.

A set of Plastic Performance Parts wheels and tires were fitted to the chassis. The front inner fenders had to be cut away for the tires to fit. I removed the rear seats and console from the interior. A basic roll cage was made from some more Evergreen and glued in place.

The engine is the kit’s hemi with a quick scratch build NASCAR intake and oil pan. The kit headers are used. The badges (who needs stinkin'badges) and bottom rocker trim are removed.

In this mock -up, the interior is painted and fitted with rear axle oil cooler and and other parts from the parts box, The engine is fitted with a quick made racing intake manifold and JoHan air cleaner.

The movie car gets full chrome on top of the fenders. The race Chargers had these chrome spears removed. The movie car also used the stock Charger grill. The race Chargers used other year and model Dodge grills instead of the die cast pig that would break-up into a thousand bits of shrapnel in a good front-ender."
