Jeff Gordon's 2001 Daytona 500 Dupont Monte Carlo - Wrecked... !!

Note from Jay:
"Here is Jeff Gordon's 2001 Daytona 500 car right after he was involved in the "big one". I built his regular FLAMES car first. I cut off the front end, and then proceeded to work on the radiator by adding some strip styrene and then heating it with a candle and getting the shape I desired.

I made the "C & R" decals myself by applying Woodland Scenics graphics to clear decal paper and then applying them to the radiator. I finished "modifying" the front end by removing the front fenders, making some hoses, and wrecking the hood. Snips and hand tongs helped make this a little easier. Once again the trusty candle proved invaluable in the hood destruction. I finished up the front end by making hood teathers and a hood support. I "splattered" the underside of the hood with black paint to resemble oil.

Next step involved the sides of the car and that was typical candle work with the exception of taking a knife and scoring the dent(s) to give the look of depth. I also put some gloss black paint on the front tire to give the look of freshly spilled oil. It looks fresh as it never really dries. I made spoiler rods for the back of the spoiler. I cut and wrecked the rear side at the gas filler. I then made a filler tube hanging down with a busted end. After that I fixed the window net to hang down over the door and then took some flat black paint and made all the contact markings on the driver's side.

On this car I had to work differently. I had to finish all the painting AND decals before I could begin wrecking the car. There was no way I would have been able to apply the decals in some areas because the "sheet metal" was actually bent back on top of itself.

It took about two weeks to do the actual destruction because the candle had to be held exactly the right distance from the car to get the desired effect. Too far and it would not bend and too close the decals would melt.

Finally like a Nascar driver thanks his sponsors, I would like to say a very big thank you to Chris Shockley! Without her help this car would have never been done, because she was able to get me the reference pictures I needed so badly. "
