There's a story behind that car .............. as it is the car that cost Junior Johnson and Bill Elliott the 1992 Winston Cup Championship. Late in the race, Terry stayed out until after all the others had made their final pit stops and led one lap (Lap 315) before finally diving for the pits out of fuel. As it turned out Elliott won the race and led 102 laps. Alan Kulwicki finished second and led 103 laps .......... a one lap difference. As such both drivers were awarded 180 points and Kulwicki won the Championship by 10 points.
Had Terry not have stayed out (because Elliott was the "leader" behind him), Elliott would have led his crucial 103rd lap ..... and as the winner also, he would have received 185 points to Kulwicki's 175........ the championship points would have been tied......... and Elliott would have won the championship by virtue of his five wins versus Kulwicki's two.
When asked if he had any knowledge that by leading that lap Junior (who had released Terry after the 1989 season) would lose the championship .............. he just grinned and said "That's racing". "
