1/64th NASCAR Models by Lou Colyer!!

Fonty Flock's 1955 Chevy

Quote from Lou:
"...There are many books and many more web sites that can tell us that on March 26, 1955 Fonty FLock drove Frank Christian's new 1955 Chevrolet to the marque's first Grand National (now Nextel Cup) series win at Columbia Speedway, South Carolina.

Unfortunately such facts as are available about this race have not been reinforced with pictures of the winning car. I have yet to see a picture of this car as it raced at Columbia, but a recent publication, Greg Fielden's NASCAR CHRONICLE, contains a black and white photo of the car being driven by Fonty Flock that contains enough detail to make modeling it feasible.

Granted I may have made a few creative interpretations along the way - we certainly don't want perfection to get in the way of having a little clean fun - but, here is my very, very humble attempt at Fonty Flock's 1955 Chevy.

(There are some other books with pictures of this Chevrolet. CHEVROLET STOCK CAR CHRONICLE by Phil Hall and the auto editors of Consumer Guide has a tantalizing photo of Fonty and the car at Bowman-Grey Stadium, but owner Frank Christian is standing beside the car and blocking most of the side details. DARLINGTON International Raceway 1950-1967 by Tom Kirkland and David Thompson has a photo of the car as driven by Slick Smith in the 1955 labor day Southern 500 at Darlington which has a very different graphic layout.)"

More from Lou:
"Several years ago I began collecting 1/64th scale diecast race cars. The collection grew, and as I learned more about NASCAR history I realized that certain historical cars would never be available for purchase. Over time I discovered that older model cars like those once raced on NASCAR tracks were available in 1/64th scale. These could be repainted and decorated and added to the collection, and this I have done.

With a computer and a printer I have been able to add 'impossible' cars to my race car collection.

This is not to say that I am a great modeler. Far from it. But I do see potential in the 1/64th scale medium. It can be challenging because source cars are often not easy to find, and are often not plentiful when they are available. There does not seem to be a network of aftermarket parts like wheels or decals to use. You pretty much make what you need for a project. The problems are not insurmountable, and when you look at some of the source cars available, it's fun to see how close you can get to the pictures you're working from."

"...above is a picture to of the Frank Christian/Fonty Flock '55 Chevy. It provides verification of the body paint scheme."
