Danny Byrd's 1976 season HURON VALLEY STEEL Mustang LM

decals by BULLRING GRAPHIX!

(Model updated October 27 2010 with correct rear stripe and trunk lid number - thanks to Jim Hehl for the references!)

Danny Byrd was inducted into the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. He was a Michigan racing legend with over 200 feature wins. He competed in his first race in 1958 at Flat Rock Speedway, driving for Glen Sweet. His last race was at season's end at Toledo in 1979, driving for Stan Yee. He raced Late Models, ARCA and NASCAR Grand National Stock Cars throughout his career.

In 1974 Byrd started campaigning a slick-looking Tom Pistone-built Mustang. Len Fritz from Huron Valley Steel owned and sponsored Byrd’s ride through 1977. The Mustangs were fast, but sometimes unreliable; still Byrd managed to pile up wins throughout the ARCA circle of tracks.

The model pictured was one of his 1976 versions. Body came from the recently reissued 1970 Monogram Mustang Mach I kit. Modifications included removing harware, filling in headlight csvities, a new tail light panel, and severely hogging out the fwnders, as per references, and to match the wheelbase of the Superstocker chassis.

The chassis came from the SuperStocker Monte Carlo reissue, with only minor modifications. I used the engine from the Mach I kit, with the Superstocker trannie replacing the Ford version. Wheels and tires were the stock SuperStocker items, with my newly-minted Goodyear decals on them... likely shoulda been Firestone, looking at the contingencies... oh, well...

Paint was GM white over PlastiKote White primer. After consulting with Jim Hehl and Rod McLeod, I masked off and painted the deep red areas. To me theyy looked like a burgundy red, so I used a Ford colour, Duplicolor DSFM150 Dark Red. Thanks for the advise, Rod and Jim!

Decals were designed by Rod, and they fit perfectly.

Final assembly went well: it was a pleasant change to build a model where the body was a virtual plop-fit onto the chassis. I'm not much of a Ford guy, but this will be a nice addition to my short track collection!
