From the CHANCE 2 Team History Web Page:
"When the banner and logo were unveiled by co-owners Teresa Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in January of 2003, the name was a resurrection, of sorts, with one of the original owners still involved.
Now, with Dale Jr. and Teresa as co-owners, Chance 2 Motorsports is a continuation of what Dale’s dad started in the mid-1990s. The team’s first outing was the 2002 Busch Series race at Richmond International Raceway with Dale Jr. driving a Gossamer-themed car. Not only did he sit on the pole, he handily won the race, too."
Chance 2 continued their winning ways into 2004 with the car you see here. This was one of the many "must-do's" that Sam decided to work on. I finished the model a couple or three weeks ago that you see here.
These decals were designed by Sam to fit the new REVELL 2003 #48 Monte Carlo. The body was primed with PlastiKote white aerosol primer, then topcoated with GM Code 10 Arctic White aerosol automotive touch-up lacquer from my favourite model paint shop - Canadian Tire.. Using references as a guide, I masked off the roof, decklid and hood so they would remain white. There is also a thin white belt around the bottom of the car, except for rear quarterpanels and rear bumper, which which I masked off. TAMIYA’s TS-19 Blue Metallic, applied right over the white was a good match for references and the roof number colour on the decal we had put together. It took about three medium coats to develop consistent coverage over the white (aerosol can heated, as per normal pracice, in hot tap water for better atomization...). The decal sheet we put together contains all required graphics except contingencies and grilles, which came from the kit decal sheet or SLIXX 2002-2003 sheets.
Once all the decals were in place, I let them dry for a day, and applied several LIGHT coats of TAMIYA TS13 clear (rattlecan heated in warm tapwater for a fine spray), followed up a day later with TURTLE WAX polishing compound. At this point I assembled the kit chassis which needed to be painted light grey. For added accuracy, I liberated the ignition boxes from the roll cage and installed them on top of the dashboard on the right side.
I then plopped the body onto it, and had what I thought was a great looking model of one of Dale Jr's nicer paint jobs. Of the three Junior Oreo cars (2002, 2003, 2004) this is in my opinion the nicest paint job. Unfortunatley, in order to simulate the car as it won at Daytona, I had to add that NASCAR-mandated, really ugly, roof dam, and, not so noticeable, the wickerbill on the rear spoiler. I constructed the roof spoiler out of Plastruct StripStyrene, using #263 .100 inch "C" channel, with the top of the "C" filed off plus some #264 strip to make the base plate. (Only went this route because my local shop had no L-angle strips in stock...). I painted it flat black, sighed, and installed it on the roof. The rear spoiler wickerbill was a narrow strip of .010 Plastruct, arced to fit the spoiler curve...
As for the Race - it took 3 days, but Junior rounded out a highly successful 2004 Speedweeks by winning the rain-delayed Hershey Kisses 300 BGN race on Monday the 16th Feb. Since then, Martin Truex Jr has wheeled this car, with several sponsors, to much success... we're workin' on those...
