decals by BULLRING GRAPHIX!

The first sponsorship I remember seeing was in 1971 on the Late Model of Don Biederman who had returned to Canada full-time two years before, after struggling to make his way onto the Grand National circuit. He sold his GN car to a young Wisconsin racer by the name of Dave Marcis and came home with a Late Model Sportsman car that he bought from Boscoe Lowe. He won a lot of races in 1969 and 1970, and that led to a deal with Castrol for 1971.

"I was going to build the car from the AMT Modified Stocker 65 Chevelle, but given the wheelwell issues of that body and the fact of discovering Biederman's was actually a '64, I opted for a resin body from Fred instead. I was, however, determined to try and use the '65 Chevelle chassis in my quest to show you can make a reasonably good shelf model with these old kits. I swapped out the body and wheels for Fred's stuff and changed the tires. I don't consider this to be nearly as successful as my earlier Torino and Fairlane builds but it is what it is On the chassis, I cut the rear springs apart into three pieces and turned them upside down to try to fix the "Monster Truck" stance of the kit chassis. I also cut away the springs from the front bars. I didn't cut the hood from the body so didn't get hung up on the underhood details but I put the kit engine in place.
