Norm Lelliott's CASTROL Camaro - 1973 Season Canadian "EXPORT A" Series Champion
|
decals by BULLRING GRAPHIX!

Story from Rod:
"Norm Lelliott drove this technologically advanced stock car to the
Canadian Export "A" Series title in 1973.
The car featured design elements and parts borrowed from sports car
racing by designer Brad Francis and engine builder Dave Billes.
Francis and Billes would later go on to Can-Am and CART success with
Jacques Villeneuve and Canadian Tire. Dave's son Al has had a
successful IHRA drag racing career.
The car was an evolution of the original computer car raced the
previous year, a 1970 Chevelle running a 337 cid small block and
weighing 2725 pounds. The idea being that a lightweight car could
challenge the standard big block because of the 8 pounds per cubic
inch weight rule.

The Camaro also had a small block when the bulk of the field was big
block powered. Like the Chevelle it featured a dry sump long before
this was common in stock cars of any kind.
The car had no A-arms and the suspension is similar to that used on
Super Late Models today. There is no front roll hoop either and the
engine is a stressed part of the chassis.
The rear wheels from the Tobias mod to be a good match for the sports
car wheels and cut the A frames off the Super Stocker chassis.
The body has a full bumper from Dencon. I was able to make this fit
into the kit's front end so avoided a little surgery. I added fender
flares using plastic from coin protectors.
The biggest challenge was replicating the motor mount and front
suspension and I ended up scratch building it. I added oil lines and
plug lines to complete the under hood detail.
