DALE EARNHARDT Jr's 1999 SUPERMAN BGN MONTE CARLO - FINAL VERSION!!

Sam sent this set of graphics to me several months ago, and, with other things on the go, I just never got around to doing much with them. Maybe it's takin' me too long to warm up to "Little E"...

But a few weeks back, I took a closer look, after looking at some shots of the car on CIAstockphotos, and getting more inquiries on this decal than any other from interested modellers... Wow... Sam had done a superb job in catching the detail, so I started playing around with them.

The shots you see here are of my final version, with registration improved, and side decals resized according to pix of actual car.

Starting kit is the regular Revellogram DEjr AC DELCO BGN car, issued a year or so back. But you could use any slabsided Monte Carlo, as none of the #3 kit decals were used. Could use the fender decals, but SLIXX does 'em better...

masking is critical! One of the tricky items is the masking of the white/blue break; it needs to follow the contours of the side numeral. (At first I thought it was a "shadow" effect associated with the numbers, but Sam set me straight...) I considered using the kit decal, that included the white area, but the numbers aren't right, and the side Superman image would be in front of part of it, and behind the rest... a daunting thought to achieve!

So what I did was paint the white, then, using a 15% photocopy blowup of the side numbers, masked the "dip" the number resides in using a cutout of the blowup.

All the major decals seen here come from the sheet I printed. I only needed to add contingency decals, headlight and grille decals to complete the graphics. The dark blue is a touchup aerosol, Honda Baltic Blue, from the late '80's, applied over a white base in several coats until right depth of colour achieved.

I had no clue where or when DEjr ran this car, or how he finished. Site contributor Dustin Klassen was kind enough to fill in this info from me. (Dustin is from the Phoenix area, so he'd know):

"The car was run at the Inagural OutBack Steakhouse 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. He clinched the Championship that day, and Jeff Gordon won the event. I know Dale led a bit, because Ron Hornaday (Team Car # 31 Napa) gave up the lead for Jr to get the bonus points. Jr just kept out front for awhile. but did clinch the championship, and rode around the track in the back of the pickup truck with his dad and crew, I hate the 3 clan, but It was a nice moment in racing history that I will always remember..."

I was very pleased to add this car to my collection! Great work, Sam! Clark's glasses on the hood alone are worth the effort!!
